First up is one of my favorite Valentine’s Day recipes adapted from the Healthy Hands Cooking library: Fruit Kebabs with Chocolate Drizzle Sauce

This couldn’t be simpler to make and is an easy way to get kids in the kitchen and participating in food preparation. Scroll through for my recipe tips!

One way I like to get kiddos involved with this recipe is by letting them choose the fruit and designing their kebabs in unique patterns:

  • What are their favorite fresh fruits?
  • What is in season at your market?

A recipe like this is an opportunity to chat with your kids about food choices and let them have a bit of autonomy in choosing what they would like on their skewer.

I also give my chefs-in-training the chance to use tools like mini fruit and vegetable cutters to make fun shapes. For Valentine’s day, we chose a heart but many cutter sets come with shapes like stars, flowers, wavy circles, animals and more. This adds some festivity to any holiday or season and makes these skewers just plain fun! These are the ones I use in my classes and at home.

For the youngest chefs-in-training, this kitchen activity is a good opportunity to practice fine motor skills and pattern/color recognition. As with beading on a string, this motion of picking up a piece of fruit and threading on a skewer or toothpick is helpful for fine motor development.

Let your child create as many patterns and color combinations as their little heart desires.

After our skewers were assembled, we opted to drizzle the melted chocolate from a condiment bottle.

This is an extra (optional) step but provides a bit of whimsy to the kebabs. If you choose this route you may want to add a bit of coconut oil to the melted chocolate so it flows through the tip and doesn’t melt as quickly.
